What is a “monument” ?

From a material, visible, tangible and immovable construction, we create a monument of sounds, movements, and figures; a virtual monument already contained in the object but suddenly revealed, witnessed, increased through a supplementary, a dimension still unheard of.

This word is generally understood as an “imposing structure”, and the adjective “monumental”  usually refers to  “gigantic” or even “crushing”; and it is true that our project is dedicated to urban spaces, and intended for a large public. But the latin root is really “monere”, which conveys the notion of warning, testifying, witnessing (as in “monitor,” or even “monster”, a divine warning, and monstration of course...). This notion should not be limited to “remembering” (such as a “war monument”); it is also the manifestation of the living and of things in motion.

From a material, visible, tangible and immovable construction, we create a monument of sounds, movements, and figures; a virtual monument already contained in the object but suddenly revealed, witnessed, increased through a supplementary, a dimension still unheard of. However, the site's “memory” is also one of ingredients that enters the composition of this art form which we can consider to be contextual. Instrument|Monument starts by investigating and exploiting the real sound potentials of a site, a monument, a structure, a public place …

Every shape, every material has a sound. This sound is often tiny, inaudible, never before heard. Nevertheless, without knowing it, everyday, we pass by musical instruments, “sounding” objects in any case. The only thing missing that would give them the status of a musical instrument is the musician, and naturally, the means for being listened to: the amplification of these secret vibrations is made possible thanks to special microphones: the vibrations are no longer captured in the air but directly at the heart of the material.
